Disciples of Jesus are Praying Disciples
One of the key attributes of a disciple of Jesus is this: we are praying disciples. Prayer isn’t just something we do occasionally—it’s our lifestyle. What does Jesus tell us about the importance and frequency of prayer, and what does it mean to be watchful in prayer?
Pray Always 🙌
Paul writes in Ephesians 6:18:
“Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints.”
Prayer is not a one-time event—it’s a posture. “Praying always” means staying spiritually awake and alert 🕰️. The Greek word for watchful means stay awake, no unnecessary time off. Jesus said the same in Matthew 26:41:
“Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
Pray Without Ceasing 🔄
Paul reminds us in 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18:
“Rejoice always 😊, pray without ceasing 🙏, in everything give thanks 🙌.”
What does that look like? It’s living in constant awareness of God—bringing everything to Him in prayer (Philippians 4:6), persevering even when it’s hard (Romans 12:12). To persist with intense effort despite difficulty 💪. Prayer is our spiritual workout 🏋️.
Why Stay Watchful? 👀
Because we have an enemy. 1 Peter 5:8 says:
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”
Prayer keeps us alert to God’s purposes and aware of the enemy’s schemes. It helps us walk in obedience, live in our identity, and anticipate Christ’s return ✨.
Our Posture 🧎
Colossians 4:2 says:
“Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving.”
This is lifestyle Christianity—prayer-saturated alertness. Not conformed to the world 🌍, but leading our lives toward His purposes every day.
Conclusion ✅
Disciples of Jesus need a posture of watchfulness—active, vigilant, and persevering in prayer. This prayerfulness strengthens us, builds our faith, and leads us to walk in the Spirit (another key attribute of Jesus’s disciples).
👉 Let’s commit to being praying disciples—alert, steadfast, and full of faith!
